KS1

Key Stage 1

Key Stage 1 (KS1) is the first two years of primary school in England, usually for children aged 5 to 7. It's made up of Year 1 and Year 2.

What's taught in KS1?
  • English: Children learn to read, write, and apply their literacy skills across other subjects 

  • Mathematics: Children learn core number skills, such as counting, doubling, and adding 

  • Science: Children learn about science 

  • Art and design: Children learn about art and design 

  • Physical education: Children learn physical education, including swimming 

  • Optional subjects: Schools may teach optional subjects like foreign languages, PSHE, and citizenship 
     

How is KS1 taught? 
  • Teachers use a cross-curricular approach, with lessons that are topic-based

  • Teachers use paired discussion tasks, role play, and collaborative learning activities

  • Teachers encourage children to develop their speaking, listening, and social skills
     

How is KS1 assessed?
  • The government requires assessments to be made of children at KS1 

  • Schools may use teacher assessment frameworks to inform classroom practice
